Imagine a time when exotic caulerpa overtakes the pristine Bay of Islands where we now love to fish, dive and swim.
There will be no shellfish as this exotic weed chokes the sea bed.
It may be impossible to swim, kayak or dive in infested areas as this weed grows upwards and outwards at 30mm every day.
If we do nothing, that time may be here very soon.
We want to ensure that future generations have the same privileges we’ve had - to dive for scallops, kina and other shellfish, swim in pristine bays, kayak and enjoy the marine biodiversity.
How we work
Eradication
Initiate a community driven team to eradicate the current exotic caulerpa outbreak in Omakiwi Bay, Te Rawhiti and manage any future outbreaks in the wider Bay of Islands
Assess technologies
Assess technologies that may enable efficient and cost-effective eradication
Education
- Educate the public on how to stop the spread of exotic caulerpa
- Create resources to educate youth on future impacts of exotic weeds that are eliminating our natural species
Ongoing monitoring
Establish long term monitoring programmes to identify any future outbreaks early and treat them expeditiously
